Flea and Tick Preventatives

We realize there are a lot of flea and tick products out there to choose from. To make your decision a little easier we've put the ones we offer on a single list for you, with some key points about them.

Advantage II (Imidacloprid, Pyriproxyfen): FLEAS ONLY  

  • Safe for dogs at least 7 weeks old and over 3 lbs, and cats at least 8 weeks old and over 5 lbs
  • DO NOT USE CANINE ADVANTAGE ON CATS!
  • DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO HAVE CONTACT WITH TREATED AREA UNTIL DRY!
  • Canine: Kills fleas, flea eggs, larvae, and lice. Feline: Does not kill lice
  • Kills fleas on contact, 98% of fleas are dead in 12 hours
  • Caution in pregnant or lactating pets
  • Waterproof: apply 24-48 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Apply monthly

Comfortis (Spinosad): FLEAS ONLY  

  • Safe for dogs at least 14 weeks old and 3 lbs, and cats at least 14 weeks old and 2 lbs
  • Must be given with a meal
  • Kills fleas
  • Flea must bite pet to die
  • Starts killing fleas within 30 minutes; 100% of fleas dead within 4 hours
  • Use with caution on pets with seizures/epilepsy, high doses of ivermectin and breeding, pregnant or lactating pets
  • Oral beef flavored tablet
  • Prescription only
  • Given monthly

Cheristin Feline (Spinetoram): FLEAS ONLY

  

  • Safe for cats at least 8 weeks old and 2 lbs
  • Kills fleas
  • Kills fleas on contact and flea does not have to bite
  • Starts working within 30 minutes; 100% of fleas dead within 12 hours
  • Apply 24 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Caution in pregnant or lactating pets

Bravecto Chews (Fluralaner): FLEAS AND TICKS ONLY

  • Safe for DOGS ONLY at least 6 months old and at least 4.4 lbs
  • Kills fleas and the Black legged tick, American dog tick, and Brown dog tick
  • Give one tablet every 3 months
  • Safe to use every 2 months to kill the Lonestar tick
  • Chewable tablet
  • No known contraindications
  • Begins killing fleas in 1 hour
  • 98% of fleas dead within 12 hours. 100% dead in 48 hours

Frontline Tritak Feline (Fipronil, (S)-Methoprene, Etofenprox): FLEAS AND TICKS ONLY    

          

  • Safe for cats 12 weeks old
  • Kills adult fleas, flea eggs, flea larvae, ticks, lice and controls sarcoptic mange
  • Kills flea on contact; flea does not have to bite pet
  • Starts killing fleas in 1 hour
  • Caution in pregnant and lactating pets
  • Waterproof: apply 24 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Apply monthly 

Adavantix II (Imidacloprid and Permethrin): FLEAS, TICKS, MOSQUITOES  

  • Safe for DOGS ONLY at least 7 weeks old
  • Kills fleas, flea eggs, larvae, lice, ticks and mosquitoes. Repels biting flies
  • Kills fleas on contact, the flea does not have to bite the pet
  • Do not use on pregnant or lactating pets
  • Waterproof: apply 24-48 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Apply monthly

NexGard (Afoxolaner): FLEAS AND TICKS  

  • Safe for DOGS ONLY at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 4 lbs
  • Kills fleas and American Dog tick 
  • 100% of fleas dead within 24 hours
  • Use with caution on pregnant or lactating pets. Use with caution on pets with seizures 
  • Chewable beef flavored tablet
  • Prescription required
  • give monthly

Capstar (Nitenpyram): FLEAS ONLY  

  • Safe for dogs and cats at lest 4 weeks old and 2 lbs
  • Kills adult fleas only and does NOT prevent further infestations
  • Fleas start dying within 30 minutes; fleas must bite pet to die
  • 90% of fleas dead in 4 hours in dogs and 6 hours in cats
  • Oral tablet 
  • Safe for pregnant and nursing pets
  • Can be given daily
  • Prescription required

Revolution (Selamectin): FLEAS, TICKS, HEARTWORM PREVENTION  

  • Safe for dogs 6 weeks old and cats at least 8 weeks old
  • In Dogs: Kills fleas and the American Dog tick. Also treats ear mites, sarcoptic mange and prevents heartworm disease
  • In Cats: Kills fleas and treats hookworms, roundworms, ear mites and sarcoptic mange. Also, prevents heartworm disease.
  • Kills fleas on contact
  • 100% fleas dead in 24 hours
  • Safe for pregnant and lactating pets
  • Waterproof; apply 2 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Prescription only
  • Apply monthly. Can reapply every 14 days if needed

Trifexis (Spinosad & Milbemycin): FLEAS, HEARTWORM PREVENTION  

  • Safe for DOGS ONLY at least 8 weeks of age and 5 lbs. Must be given with a meal
  • Kills fleas, prevent heartworms disease, treats hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms
  • Fleas must bite pet to die
  • 100% fleas dead in 4 hours
  • Caution with pets on high doses of Ivermectin, seizures, and breeding/lactating/pregnant pets
  • Oral tablet
  • Prescription required
  • Given monthly

Advantage Multi for cats (Imidacloprid & Moxidectin) FLEAS, HEARTWORM PREVENTION

  • Safe for CATS ONLY at least 9 weeks of age and 2 lbs
  • Kills fleas, prevents heartworm disease, and treats hookworms, roundworms, and ear mites
  • Use with caution in severely geriatric cats. Do not use on pregnant, lactating or breeding pets
  • Kills fleas on contact
  • Apply 24-48 hours before bathing or when completely dry
  • Apply monthly
  • Prescription required

Heartgard Plus (Ivermectin & Pyrantel):  HEARTWORM PREVENTION  

  • For dogs: Prevents heartworm disease, treats hookworms and roundworms
  • For cats: Prevents heartworm disease and treats hookworms
  • Safe to use in pregnant and lactating pets
  • Oral, chewable, beef flavored tablet
  • Given monthly
  • Prescription required

Proheart 6 (Moxidectin): HEARTWORM PREVENTION  

  • Safe for DOGS ONLY at least 6 months of age
  • Prevents heartworm disease for 6 months
  • Injectable
  • Must be administered by a veterinarian
